The Charlestown Working Theater is an organization of people working to make theatrical experience an important part of the cultural life of Charlestown and Greater Boston.

It is our belief that a quality of life can be felt through the artistic process. We offer our participants and audiences new visions and understandings of the world around us by combining professional artistry with community spirit. The Charlestown Working Theater seeks to entertain, inform, and inspire.

The 2013-14 Season marks both our 40th anniversary, and 20 years of dedicated service by our Co-Directors Jennifer and Kristin Johnson. In preparation for this important moment, CWT’s Board devised a 5 year Strategic Plan that ensures the continuation and growth of CWT’s mission of Building Stronger Community Through Creative Performance.

To celebrate these twin, momentous anniversaries, we are announcing our first major gift giving campaign with the creation of our Annual Fund. Our first goal is to raise $150,000 over the next three years. You can help ensure CWT continues to bring excellent children’s programs, adventurous theater productions and educational offerings to Boston and Charlestown for many years to come. Both the Board and staff of CWT are committed to making this possible.

We are always amazed at the support the Charlestown Working Theater’s community shows and we know that with your continued help we will reach our goal to sustain our important work. Now more than ever is the time to donate.

With gratitude,

D’Arcy Goldman Board President

  • Children & Youth Programming

The CWT believes strongly in the empowering quality of the arts. It is an essential part of the CWT artistic mandate to offer affordable quality arts programming to the youth of Charlestown. The CWT’s educational programming fulfills many of the theater's goals by bringing the community together in a creative enterprise. These experiences empower the participants in selecting positive lifestyle choices. CWT provides the opportunity for children and youth from differing backgrounds to come together in a nurturing and productive environment where creativity, mutuality, and responsibility are valued and encouraged. Students are able to take weekly classes in theatre, music, dance, and visual art, as well as participate in CWT’s popular youth performances. CWT’s educational partners include the Actors’ Shakespeare Project, The Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, Warren-Prescott School, and Citizens Schools at the Clarence Edwards Middle School.
  • CWT Core Company

The CWT core artistic group, led by Jennifer Johnson, creates original performances, often in collaboration with partnering artists and companies. Most recently they performed their acclaimed adaptation of The Odyssey, which played to sold-out audiences from 2009-2012. The Boston Globe called the performance "Hypnotic, beautiful, dreamy.". CWT collaborates regularly with Double Edge Theatre of Ashfield MA. Internationally CWT has created performance exchanges with Armenia’s National Center for Aesthetics and Poland’s Teatr ZAR, fund by the Trust for Mutual Understanding. The company is currently working on an adaptation of Strindberg’s A Dream Play to premiere in 2013.
  • Artists in Residence

The CWT presents theater companies from the U.S and abroad in its intimate 85-seat space, offering audiences the opportunity to attend performances, participate in workshops, and engage with the dynamic work of distinguished theatre companies in an immediate and personal way. CWT has presented the work of Mabou Mines (NY, NY); Double Edge Theatre (Ashfield, MA); Teatr ZAR (Poland); Theatre Kranevit (Berlin, Germany); Grupo Jicara Teatro (Buenos Aires, Argentina); Beau Jest Moving Theatre (Boston, MA); Great Small Works (NY, NY); Armenia’s National Centre for Aesthetics with Versiliadanza (Florence, Italy); and Blair Thomas and Company (Chicago, IL) among others. The simple and beautiful CWT space is flexible and has accommodated a diverse collection of artistic visions.
